Maurice’s story about his passion for Chopin’s mazurkas:”Since my childhood I play mazurkas. The record on the photo below I brought along from the parental home. As long as I can recall that record was standing in the record-rack and more than once Artur Rubinstein, whom I still consider the greatest pianist ever, played these gems through our speakers. My parents loved Rubinstein’s records, especially when he was playing Chopin. It was an easy way for me as a child to get familiar with Rubinstein’s Steinway sound as well as with Chopin’s mazurkas. At the age of eleven, I won my first competition with a mazurka. The following years I continued playing mazurkas and I never stopped playing them. A few years ago, I recorded two mazurkas to complement a Polish art song cd that I recorded at Zefir Records. Jakko and I shared the same thought:”Let’s record all of them!”
And so it happened. As from the 16th of September, one mazurka per week will be posted online. You can follow this project at the YouTube Channel The Mazurki Project.
